REGIONAL BRAIN STORMING SESSION

On 36th IGC: A Unique Opportunity for Advancement in Geosciences

Regional Brain Storming Session held on 28th & 29th January 2016 at Shillong, as a run-up for the 36th International Geological Congress (IGC): A unique opportunity for Advancement in Geosciences which is to be held from 2nd – 8th March, 2020 at Delhi. It was organised by Secretariat, 36th IGC in collaboration with IGC cell of Geological Survey of India, NER, Shillong.

It is the sixth in the series for the 36th IGC which is to be held on Indian soil after a gap of 56 years. It aims to present a holistic view on all aspects of geosciences relevant to the region and follow it up with discussions to propose themes and subthemes pertinent to the Geology of the region that can be offered to the international audience, during the IGC 2020.

Geological domains included the following themes for thrust areas of discussion on:

  1. Himalayan tectonics
  2. Evolution of Archaean/Proterozioc crust of Northeast India
  3. Deep seated rocks of Nagaland & Manipur Ophiolite
  4. Geology of fuels: Evolution of tertiary basin of Northeast India,
  5. Natural Hazards: Landslides and Earthquakes in Northeast India.

The outcomes of the Brain Storming Session defined the themes and subthemes for the 36th IGC that are pertinent to the geological domains of the region;

  • Landslide studies- to take up challenges of predicting and developing early warning systems through instrumentaol monitoring.
  • Paleoslides of Dimapur-Kohima Section may be documented and showcased.
  • Arsenic hazards in groundwater in NER as a prospective theme.
  • Worlds largest Culmination of thrust – MCT of the Himalayas.

It also defined the gap areas that are to be addressed through collaborative studies and develop synergy amongst various geoscientific institutions and stake holders at regional level promoting theme specific studies. Decided to work out on proposed field excursions for 36th IGC with special reference to Himalayas and to identify new excursion routes especially in the context of the theme of 36th IGC “Geosciences: the basic science for sustainable future”.
