Groundwater

During early seventies, Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources, Govt. of India had carried out geo-hydrological investigations in valley areas of the State and had drilled a few exploratory wells in Dimapur and one well each in Changki & Tizit valleys in Mokokchung and Mon districts.  The sub-surface data generated through exploratory drilling carried out by CGWB Govt. of India formed the basis for further ground water development in the State.

In view of the potentiality of groundwater resources in these valley areas, the State Govt. of Nagaland during late seventies had assigned the task of groundwater exploration and developmental works within the state to the Geology and Mining Department. The Department thus created small nucleus Groundwater Cell in the department during early eighties and shouldered the responsibility for groundwater exploration and development on behalf of the user agencies/organizations of the state. The cell is manned by Geo-hydrologists with post graduate in Geology and Drilling Engineers having Mechanical/Mining Engineering degrees.

Ground water is the water that exists beneath the earth surface within the porous & voids/fractures & joints of a rock. Ground water plays an important role in the socio-economic development of any Nation. The key issue for sustainable development of groundwater resources is its scientific management. Sustainable and effective management of groundwater requires proper assessment of the available resources and understanding the changes in ground water system as well as its inter-connection with surface water. The evaluation of this resources involves a multi-disciplinary approach consisting of geo-hydrological, hydro-meteorological and hydrological studies and ultimately to evolve balancing the exploitation in terms of quantity and quality with increasing demand of water and land uses. This strategic management will greatly help in proper allocation of this vital resources amongst different users, as well as provide an insight for prevention of any likely adverse effect of uncontrolled development.

INFRA-STRUCTURE AVAILABLE WITH THE DEPARTMENT FOR GROUND WATER RESOURCES DEVELOPMENTAL AND RELATED ACTIVITIES:

(A).         Operational Infra-structures:

(i).           Truck mounted Rotary Water Well Drilling Rig                             = 1 Nos.

(ii).          Truck mounted Rotary-cum percussion Rig                                  = 2Nos.

(iii).         Truck mounted Electrical Geophysical Logger(Uptron)              = 1 No.

(iv).         DTH Water Well Drilling Rig & compressor mounted in a separate trucks attached with all   necessary  ancillary/equipments suitable for drilling in hard rock and hilly terrain of the state  = 2 Nos

(v).          Other related equipments and accessories including  compressor, welding sets, Tractor  etc.

 (B).        Available Man power

There are approx. 80 nos of technically expert personnel at various level in the discipline of geo-hydrology, drilling, mechanical, electrical and allied trades to carry out the groundwater developmental works in the state.

With available machineries and manpower the department has carried out exploratory drilling in all district Headquarters and established potential existence of Ground Water Resources in hilly terrain of the state. However, this vital resources needs to be developed judiciously on scientific basis as well as on need based so as to achieve sustainable development.
